About SOLGM

The New Zealand Society of Local Government Managers (SOLGM) is the professional management organisation for local government.  SOLGM supports local government managers and staff in building their capability and achieving work excellence to help them become better managers. 

SOLGM provides the following services to the local government sector:

  • Membership services for managers and emerging managers
  • Professional development opportunities through training programmes & courses
  • Good practice resources and toolkits
  • Representation to influence policy development and implementation

Recruitment and Retention Programme

SOLGM also helps local authorities in New Zealand in attracting and retaining talent through the nationwide Recruitment and Retention Programme.  The Programme started in 2005 to investigate the growing issues facing talent recruitment and to develop and implement strategies the local government sector needs to win the 'war for talent'. 

The Recruitment & Retention Programme work includes:

  • Developing and maintaining an umbrella employment brand for local government - People Shaping Progress
  • Developing and maintaining a one-stop website for local government careers
  • Recruitment advertising facility used exclusively by local authorities in New Zealand to promote their jobs
  • Local Government Academic Prize for Excellence given to students in 8 Universities throughout New Zealand
  • Representing the local government sector in career fairs and job expos
