Comprehensive information on migrating to New Zealand is at the New Zealand Government website www.immigration.govt.nz
However, the following tips might also be useful:
Environment
In our experience, one of the most common difficulties people have in adapting to employment in New Zealand is the ‘large/small’ nature of the issues. For instance, the Auckland metropolitan area of just over a million people is smaller than some suburbs of the world’s larger cities. Despite this small scale, Auckland still suffers the same “large-issue” problems of London, New York, Sydney and so on. Urban infrastructure, resource consumption, public financing, or growth management are as complex in this apparently smaller environment as anywhere else.
On the other hand, there are advantages in the smaller scale – there tends to be a greater opportunity to get to the core of issues, and to identify the levers that need to be pulled. Actually pulling them is another matter!
Hiring
Many migrants will have a job lined up before arriving. However, for those who do not, a very important point needs to be made:
Local employers will typically not understand the nature of your experience!
If you are from Australia or the UK, this will be less of a problem. If you are from other parts of the world, local employers will probably not know much about the organisations you have worked for, their size, their sophistication, and so on.
Your CV must explain these things in a way that enables a New Zealand employer to get a sense of what your experience actually means.
When you are preparing your CV, find a New Zealander who can ask you the kinds of questions an employer might ask, so you can adjust your CV accordingly.
